Is It Safe to Power Wash a Roof? Roof Cleaning in Ireland Explained

We don't power wash roofs. We never use high-pressure jets on roof tiles. Instead, we remove the heavy moss by hand and then apply a low-pressure soft wash with a biocidal treatment that kills the growth that's left.

Why we don't use high pressure on roofs

High-pressure washing is the right tool for a lot of driveways, but roof tiles and slates aren't one of them. Soft washing exists for surfaces that high pressure could damage, and roofs are one of those surfaces. That's why our roof cleaning is soft wash only.

How we clean a roof

  1. 1 We inspect the roof from the ground.
  2. 2 Heavy moss is scraped off and the debris removed.
  3. 3 A soft wash biocidal treatment is applied at low pressure.
  4. 4 We clear the gutters of anything that's come off the roof and do a final check.

A typical house roof takes 1 to 2 days, depending on the size and how much moss there is. For most houses we work from ladders and roof equipment. On bigger or more complex roofs, scaffolding may be needed for safety.

Why bother cleaning the roof?

Moss holds water against the tiles. In freezing weather that water can crack them, and when the moss comes loose it ends up blocking your gutters. Removing it protects the roof and keeps the gutters clearer.

What kinds of roof do you clean?

We clean pitched, flat, slate, tile and concrete roofs.

What it costs

Every roof is different: it depends on the size, the moss and the access. We give a fixed price before any work starts, usually from a few photos or a quick visit. See our roof cleaning, soft washing and moss treatment pages, or read soft washing vs pressure washing.

Soft washing uses low pressure with a cleaning solution to kill and remove moss, algae and lichen, instead of blasting the roof with high-pressure water.
